This time last year. Hoping I can get into the studio this month to expand on the ideas I've had for this style. It's quite demanding due to the illustration happening while the clay is still drying, past leather hard, but nowhere near bone dry, which means my body needs to be able to function several days in a row, (and the weather has to fit in with that too, or my window to work the clay is even more narrowed) which didn't happen much lasy year. I'd like to make a wet box (lol) but that hasn't happened yet either. Hopefully this year 🤞🤞 the fam is coming across at Easter, so hopefully I can rope dad into helping me not fuck up the plaster of Paris. 😏

The spoon ain't quite right, so I'll make another for when I fire the mug and plate mate to this bowl. The bowl, though, beautiful curve. Huzzah. Will make more of them next load too.

I think these two would make great bowls for the morning muesli I eat for managing some of my endo symptoms.

Supposedly lower impact on my body to make.. But given I got an s crack in a third, not featured here bowl, and dumped a whole heap of glaze on the ground cos the bucket was too heavy for me to carry and I didn't want to ask for help.... Not so sure how "low impact" they were in the end.

Very tactile though. 😊👌

The year 2022 was for me... I'd say... Diagnostic.
I finally got officially diagnosed with endo with my second surgery (the first surgeon didn't bother to biopsy, the only official way to diagnose the condition #hardeyeroll). I've taken more pills this year than I've taken in my entire life, but thanks to a diagnosis, finally, they have been EFFECTIVE, returning some semblance of joy into my life, albeit affecting my physical form in ways I'd rather they hadn't, further contributing to my dysphoria. Thanks to social media, I unpacked a lot of internalised ablism and made peace with my differences in "output" compared to "others", I figured out my eyesight (astigmatism causing chromatic abberation) was contributing to my pain levels by way of increasing the work my brain had to do to interpret (reading) (everything visual). In the process of working that out, I further confirmed suspicions that I very likely have ADHD and/or ASD (the optometrist always asks which is clearer, not which is easier to read... The answers seem like they should be the same, but for me, the clearer the letters, the harder they are to read as the clarity leads to amplified chromatic abberation. 🧐😵🥴 Brains hey) in hindsight, the neurodivergence should have been obvious given genetics, but cos of afab, again, just like with the endo pain I've had since I was 8 years old... my experiences were belittled, overlooked and gaslit. All in all, '22 uncovered so much that helps explain why I've felt like an outsider, merely playing the role of 'Janah' for as far back as I can remember. Despite actively "trying" to be the authentic me for over a decade, I feel like 2023 might be the year I finally get a glimpse of who I really am without the performative social constructs I've been upholding to survive.
Through it all, this beautiful man has supported me, seen the good in me when I can't, reminded me how important art is, reminded me my worth is not based on my income, acknowledged my grief in its many forms, and supported me to grieve in the many ways that I've needed to. I've found the role of housewife to be more fulfilling than I'd ever imagined; loving him is my biggest JOY 😍

I spent this week learning oil painting for the first time. My teacher, Solomon Kammer, took an incredibly eager intimate group of artists from many backgrounds though a crash course in the Zorn Palette, colour theory, colour mixing and the business of art. My mind is still swimming with all of learnt. I'm sure I'll have more to say as I rest and digest this incredibly challenging, rewarding, heart swelling, friendship forging, life altering week... but for now.. Enjoy a reel of some moments from my 40th birthday week.
